It’s really refreshing to introduce you to a New Zealand artist that hasn’t been long on my own radar.
The work of Wellington based Niels Meyer – Westfeld reminds me a lot of those amazing botanical encyclopedias that people used to store in their volumes! They examined creatures and nature from the world over and very often depicted them in motion or their natural habitat. And after learning more about Niels, its kind of no wonder!
“My father is a passionate lepidopterist and botanist and growing up in Germany, I was lucky enough to accompany him on trips around Europe while he pursued his interest,” says Niels. “His love of nature inspired me artistically and I’ve always drawn the flora and the fauna that surrounds me.”
His creative career has been a rich one but perhaps not what you would expect from someone so focused on the natural world. Trained in communication design at Central St. Martins College of Art in London he went on to work with global brands spanning from The Bodyshop and MTV to Hilton Hotels and Dr Martens!
Then – lucky for us he fell in love with our own kiwi fashion designer; Deborah Sweeney and moved to the south side. He has been involved in all visual aspects of the development of her brand including print design.
But lucky for HIM, Deborah hailed from a land with a rich and unique natural environment and below is a small peep at the results of his immersion in it.
